October Sunshine: Trading Snow for Sand
My last trip to Punta Cana in late October was pure bliss. Imagine leaving behind a frosty Calgary and stepping into a tropical paradise. The weather in Punta Cana during this time is typically around 26°C, with occasional light rain showers that quickly pass, refreshing the air and the lush landscape. It's the perfect time to experience the Dominican Republic without the peak season crowds or intense heat.
Finding Your Home Base
For a more local feel, consider staying in the El Cortecito neighbourhood. It offers a great mix of accessible resorts and smaller guesthouses. I found a charming Airbnb there for about $80 USD per night last time. If you prefer a full-service resort experience, you'll find plenty of options along Bavaro Beach, with prices ranging from $150 to $300+ USD per night, depending on the amenities.
Flavours and Frugal Tips
You absolutely must try 'La Bandera Dominicana,' the national dish of rice, beans, and meat, usually around $8-10 USD. For seafood lovers, fresh grilled fish is plentiful and delicious. While many tourist spots accept credit cards, it's wise to carry some US dollars in cash for smaller vendors and local markets; USD is widely accepted. Picking up a local SIM card at the airport for data is easy and affordable, ensuring you stay connected. Getting around is best done via pre-booked taxis or resort shuttles; local buses exist but can be less straightforward for visitors.
